COVID-19 washing your produce…

It’s just one more thing that stresses you out.

You’re in self isolation or quarantined and struggling to keep your sanity.

The last thing you want to worry about when you get your food home from the grocery store is washing your produce so you don’t have to fry, peel or boil everything.

You’ve heard the stories of crazy people in the grocery stores. Not to mention everyone touches all the produce before they buy it if it’s not prepackaged.

You’re doing everything you can to stay safe, healthy and with any luck sane.

Here are a few tips and one homerun to help you breathe a little deeper.

Tips for Washing Your Produce

COVID-19 has almost everyone second guessing nearly every aspect of their day to day lives.

Food is a big part of our daily lives and so important you want to make sure you’re doing everything you can to safeguard yourself and anyone else you feed.

When you get your groceries home the first thing you need to do is wash your hands for 20 seconds (yes, you already know how long that is…) before you wash your produce.

Most vegetables only need to be rinsed in running water giving them a rub to loosen dirt. The FDA recommends, “Rinse produce BEFORE you peel it, so dirt and bacteria aren’t transferred from the knife onto the fruit or vegetable.”

Wash your produce as soon as you get home from the store. Let them dry and then store in clean containers or bags in the frig. Do NOT use detergent, bleach or any other cleaning product since they aren’t meant to be ingested and can make you sick.

Use a clean vegetable brush to scrub firm fruit and vegetables such as melons, pineapple and cucumbers.

But in today’s world you may still wonder if you’re doing enough.

A Better Way to Wash Your Produce During COVID-19

After my trip to Ecuador several years ago I had a serious bout with lymphocytic colitis for three years. NOT fun to say the least.

Six months ago I traveled to Mexico and I’m still here. It’s the first time after my trip to Ecuador I’ve traveled to a country where I couldn’t drink the water. An expat here shared that she uses a product called Microdyn to disinfect her produce all the time.

Now I use it on ALL my produce. It kills 99% of all germs and bacteria.

When I get home with my groceries, I separate them into two categories. What I’m going to peel, boil or fry first then I wash those and set them aside to dry. The tomatoes, cilantro, peppers and whatever else I picked out that day that I plan to eat fresh go into a big pot (after I wash them to get rid of the dirt) and I cover them with bottled water. After adding several drops of Microdyn, I swish the water around and cover them with anything  that will make sure they stay submerged. After 15 minutes I take them out and lay them on a clean towel to dry or I hand dry them depending on my schedule.

It’s currently available at Amazon and you can click the link above to purchase Microdyn. Keep in mind a little goes a LONG way.

Now you  can wash your produce with Microdyn and hopefully it will bring you some peace of mind during this unprecedented time.

Stay healthy and safe!
